The design stage is where the project changes gear from investigation and conceptual into a more rigorous delivery. 

The steps will systematically take the project through the processes of designing the business solution, finding options for delivery and finding a method of delivery.

The project should be driven by the business requirements and performance improvements, so avoid the temptation to head for the technical requirements too early. The Business Operating Model is where the benefits and performance will come from, if this is well understood, the specifications should be easier.

The stage could include procurement so the timescales for delivery will vary greatly between different projects. On a large project, the project organisation could be extended to include a Senior Supplier.
