Balancing the Portfolio

The Balance stage provides/ assesses the overarching delivery of the portfolio. There will be day to day operational management of the portfolio which will involve the monitoring, control and assurance of the programmes and projects. This stage is focusing on the strategic direction rather than just about the quality of the controls.

Balance is looking at the overall rate of change, how new or changing priorities are being cascaded into initiatives and that the balance and focus of the portfolio is moving with the strategic goals of the organisation.

The milestones in the stage are nominal and just highlight the considerations that should be happening at the portfolio board, and that it should try to avoid being bogged down in purely looking backwards at the progress of initiatives.

A key activity at this level is resolving contentions that are emerging in the delivery areas, these are likely to involve dealing with dependencies between projects, resolving dilemmas around priorities and ensuring that the changes are implemented in the right sequence.
